- Carry your passport with you at all times to ensure against loss or theft. For added protection, take a color copy of your passport with you but don’t pack it in your suitcase. Also, leave another copy with a family member or friend at home. You can leave a copy with me, if you would like. so that if you lose your Don’t be alarmed if the hotel asks for your passport. Hotels are sometimes required to hold your passport overnight to comply with local regulations. Ask when your passport will be returned.
- Don’t expect European hotels to be the same as those at home. While the accommodations are comfortable, rooms in European hotels are often smaller than U.S. hotels. If booking a triple room, the third bed may be a rollaway cot.
- If on an escorted tour, the tour company will usually arrange for wake-up calls depending on the agenda for the following day. Should the call not go through, or if you are a heavy sleeper and don’t hear it, your own back-up travel alarm clock is a good idea.
- It is important to be considerate of others on the tour and be prompt at meeting times and places. Be sure you know where and when to meet the group in the morning.
- It’s a good idea to ask your tour director for his or her room number in case it’s needed for any reason. Most will carry a cell phone and you might want to jot it down, in case you get separated from the group and need to call them.
- Each person should bring their own fold-up umbrella in case it rains.
- You will not be allowed in most churches and cathedrals if you are wearing shorts, sleeveless blouses or short-sleeved shirts.
- Washcloths are not standard in most hotels in Europe. Take inexpensive ones with you or cut an old bath towel from home into squares to use as washcloths. When you are done with them, just throw them away.
- When sightseeing on your own, remember to take a business card from the hotel. Should the taxi driver not speak English, you can show him the card.
- If you like to shop, remember to take into consideration airline weight restrictions and pack lightly or take an extra small carry on to allow for purchases.
